Art and technology is a beautiful combination and this concept is what UT Dallas grad student, Amy Florence Pickup of the Emerging Media and Communications program, would like to teach girls as she helps hosts the Electronic Fashion Camp along with Etiquette Creative and the Design Your World team from August 1 to 3, 2012 at Oil and Cotton within the Bishops Arts District. At this camp, the girls will learn about designing fashion and electronics using LilyPad Arduino, a microcontroller board specifically for wearable fashion and textiles. This particular electronic device can be sewn into fabric along with power supplies, lights and sensors. One example is a performer’s costume lighting up during a musical concert.

I think this is an absolutely perfect idea and opportunity for young children to be introduced in both the design and technology fields of study so they can be better prepared to be leaders and innovators in this society’s growing techno-culture. We may be looking at future designers, engineers, artists and technologists.

Girls will have an opportunity to work with tech savvy women to create fashion projects using the LilyPad Arduino. Registration is $95 per girl with materials, breakfast and lunch provided for them.
