I remember watching the Creature from the Blue Lagoon in 3-D when it was on television years ago. I could see fishes seemingly swimming out of the television screen and the creature stretching it’s webbed hand out to grab me. 3-D was in theater screens right up to the 90’s, then it just disappeared and went the way of the drive-thru, but now it’s making a comeback onto the scene, all thanks to the highly grossed movie in history, Avatar.

The concept of 3-D is the same but the technology has really changed over the years. Gone are the red and green glasses but the oversized shades that the theaters provide helped bring this computer animated movie to life.

Now we’re seeing a trend in movies where 3-D is becoming an option to watch. Not only is 3-D being utilized in movies but electronic companies such as Samsung and LG has already built 3-D televisions and Blu-Ray players so consumers can get the 3-D experience straight from the comfort of their own home.

A 3-D based product, called the pCubee, allows you to interact with games or watch content within a five-screen cubed device. It’s in the research phase but when it’s perfected it should be in the hands of the consumers as a new entertainment gadget. The demo is below as well.

Why is there this sudden resurgence of 3-D? Well, we’re at the point of society where we have the capability to interact with technology at a much deeper level and experience the interaction. Now is a good time for 3-D to add to our need of interactivity and control. High definition is still being adopted by everybody so it will take some time for 3-D to be widely accepted and adopted as well, but I wouldn’t be surprised that television stations will add 3-D channels to their cable lineups pretty soon or that the next computers and smartphones will be 3-D enabled.
