Cecil The Lion Is In A List of Social Change Events
Cecil the Lion has been a sensitive topic as of late. I’m sure a majority of us has never known about this majestic animal until we heard about his tragic death through illegal hunting. The social channels were hot with debates, comments, online petitions, hashtags and emotional arguments regarding not only about Cecil but the growing needs for strong animal conservation. This trend continues to get stronger as outside forces began to respond to this such as the Zimbabwe government requesting extradition for the hunter as well as the airline industry banning the shipment of animal trophies.
Micro-singularities such as these can bring about change to a certain degree in some cases but it can definitely inform people of situations that require change. I can see that the huge engagement that arose from this should also emerge into other cases that require constant social channeling.
Let’s tweet about ongoing poverty, post about domestic violence, blog about the happiness of adopting unwanted children from around the world or present videos on cruelty to animals. As a digitally savvy society we can create messages within online social collectives to help drive change but it can go beyond just communication, you can actively participate in the change by taking more action. From donating money, putting together a run or just volunteering.
Today, it is the online world that shares stories which is then picked up my major news media, from there it can go global. If you feel that something needs the world’s attention, take action! Use the free tools available online and watch it grow and spread like a digital virus.
