How Do You Define Media Ecology Theory
As I mentioned in my last blog post, I wanted to delve more into the idea of how all kinds of media environments and technology affect today’s society and culture. This particular discipline was first presented by Canadian philosopher, Marshall McLuhan where he states that “the medium is the message.” So what does this mean? It means that the form of the medium used should be the focus of study rather than the content itself.
Let’s take a look at how we express and communicate in today’s society:
We have TikTok and Instagram users recording themselves dancing to get likes and comments or taking photos about part of their lives they would like to share.
- We have TikTok and Instagram users recording themselves dancing to get likes and comments or taking photos about part of theri lives they wish to share.
- Politics and political activism is disseminated on Twitter and Facebook.
- Advertising and marketing agencies and corporations are posting content based on products they want to promote on various social media platforms.
- Video Games are connected to the Internet to engage with other players or share recording and screenshots of gameplay
The medium technology used to transfer content has a unique intent for the target audience because that is where their audience is believed to be located. The interesting part is how human behavior is affected by the content sent. You see it every day. We have elections, protests, news, and even celebrity opinions being studied and critiqued by the “global village.”
This is indeed a very interesting discipline and it covers alot so please take a brief summary of the theory below.
