Camara, Luz, Accion!: Latino Film Festivals Presents the Best of Latino Filmmakers and Art
I’ve always been an admirer of the Latino arts. Since my first trip to the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, I was enamored by the eclectic collection of paintings and sculptures done by artists in the Caribbean, my fascination also expanded to dance and music from different Latin American regions. They are all so diverse and yet they all find the common love of culture and history. Film is no different.
Latino films are a reflection of Latino society from the past and present depending on what the plotline is and they express how we interact with one another, how we build relationships, how politics are conducted and how our culture is brought to light. It’s pretty much storytelling on widescreen and these modern Latino filmmakers are today’s storytellers. I encourage those who aren’t familiar with Latino films to try one or two out, you may find that Latino films may offer a more creative and expressive approach than what you are used to watching.
There are two events that are happening right now that are showing a variety of Latino films from up and coming filmmakers. One is the 17th annual San Diego Latino Film Festival (March 11-21) being held at the Media Arts Center San Diego and the other is the 26th Chicago Latino Film Festival (April 26-29) at the Latino Cultural Center of Chicago. More information are posted on their respective websites. Check it out and enjoy a whole new film experience!
